Cuculus Himalayanus, Himalayan Cuckoo. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

This print showcases the exquisite beauty of the Cuculus Himalayanus, also known as the Himalayan Cuckoo. Taken from an engraving created in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this piece captures the essence of these majestic birds found in the Himalaya Mountains. John Gould, renowned for his taxidermy skills and nicknamed "the bird-stuffer" developed a deep fascination with avian species from Eastern regions. His interest was sparked when a collection of birds from the Himalayas arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s.
