EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable engraving titled "Hosiery" by an English School artist from the 19th century. The image, part of a private collection, is taken from Charles Tomlinson's book "Illustrations of Useful Arts and Manufactures" published around 1860. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical British hosiery industry. The picture depicts industrious workers engaged in various stages of the hosiery-making process. In this mid-19th-century scene, we witness skilled craftsmen operating machinery and utilizing specialized equipment such as needles, bobbins, and circular looms to create intricate loops for stockings and other hosiery items. The presence of barrels in the background hints at the significance of this industry during that era.
