SEM of mutant blood cell surface infected with HIV

HIV infected white blood cell. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the abnormal surface of a white blood cell infected with HIV virus that causes AIDS. Gag gene expression for cell surface proteins is abnormal. The HIV virus genetic material controls the cell, forcing it to express abnormal structural proteins. Normally these surface Gag proteins are tiny spheres, but here the cells outer surface is formed from large irregular rods. HIV causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). AIDS destroys white blood cells, leading to a weakened immune system. To compare with an uninfected cell surface see image P248/212. Magnification x6600 at 4.5x5.5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mutant blood cell surface infected with HIV, the virus responsible for causing AIDS. The image reveals the abnormality in the white blood cell's surface due to Gag gene expression, which controls the production of cell surface proteins. In healthy cells, these proteins appear as tiny spheres; however, in this infected cell, they manifest as large irregular rods. HIV infection leads to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition characterized by the destruction of white blood cells and subsequent weakening of the immune system. This SEM provides valuable insight into how HIV manipulates its host cells at a microscopic level. The magnification factor of x6600 allows us to observe intricate details on a 4.5x5.5 inch print size. By comparing this image with an uninfected cell surface (available in image P248/212), researchers can better understand the impact of HIV on cellular structure and function. As we delve into medical science and explore diseases like HIV/AIDS, it becomes increasingly important to comprehend their mechanisms and effects on our bodies' fundamental components such as white blood cells. This powerful visual representation underscores both the complexity of viral infections and highlights ongoing research efforts aimed at combating them effectively.
