Planet Neptune, showing weather patterns

Clouds on Neptune. Planet Neptune, showing weather patterns in its atmosphere. Neptune appears mostly blue because of absorption of red light by methane gas in its atmosphere. Clouds above most of the methane absorption appear white. Areas which also absorb blue light appear green. The planets equatorial jet stream appears as a dark blue band at upper centre. The gas in this jet travels at 1440 km per hour. Image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope using visible and infrared wavelengths. (The weather on the opposite side of the planet during the same rotation is shown on R420/074)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of Planet Neptune showcases its mesmerizing weather patterns, offering a glimpse into the enigmatic atmosphere that envelops this distant celestial body. The predominantly blue hue of Neptune is a result of methane gas present in its atmosphere, which absorbs red light and gives it a distinct azure appearance. Above the areas where methane absorption occurs, fluffy white clouds gracefully float, adding an ethereal touch to the planet's visage. Interestingly, regions that also absorb blue light manifest as vibrant green patches amidst the sea of blue. At the upper center of the image, we witness Neptune's equatorial jet stream depicted as a striking dark blue band. This powerful current propels gases at an astonishing speed of 1440 km per hour, showcasing nature's raw energy on a planetary scale. Captured by the renowned Hubble Space Telescope using visible and infrared wavelengths, this awe-inspiring photograph not only reveals Neptune's atmospheric dynamics but also highlights its intricate beauty from afar. It serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our vast universe and our relentless pursuit to unravel its mysteries. This remarkable image is courtesy of Science Photo Library and offers us an extraordinary window into Neptune's cosmic ballet – reminding us once again how small we are in comparison to the grandeur that exists beyond our own world.
