Coloured SEM of fat cells in adipose tissue
Fat cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of fat cells (orange), also known as adipocytes, in human adipose connective tissue. Connective tissue fibres (brown) are seen surrounding and supporting the fat cells. Almost the entire volume of each fat cell is occupied by a single lipid droplet formed largely of triglycerides. Fat not used in metabolic processes in the body is channelled towards these cells through small blood capillaries (not seen). Adipose connective tissue forms a thick layer under the skin. It functions as an insulating layer and energy store. Magnification: unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of adipose tissue, specifically fat cells. The image reveals a coloured scanning electron micrograph of these orange-hued adipocytes, nestled within human adipose connective tissue. Surrounding and supporting the fat cells are brown connective tissue fibres, forming a protective network. Each fat cell is predominantly occupied by a single lipid droplet comprised mainly of triglycerides. While small blood capillaries remain unseen, they play a crucial role in directing unused fat towards these cells. Adipose connective tissue forms a substantial layer beneath our skin, serving as both an insulating shield and an energy reservoir. The magnification level used to capture this mesmerizing scene remains unknown but highlights the extraordinary complexity hidden within our bodies. This photograph not only delves into the anatomy of the human body but also emphasizes key aspects such as lipid metabolism and energy storage. Science Photo Library's expertise in capturing scientific marvels shines through this print, providing viewers with an opportunity to appreciate the wonders that exist at microscopic levels within us all.
