EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Mehmed II, the renowned Ottoman Sultan who left an indelible mark on history. Known as "the Conqueror". Mehmed's most notable achievement was his capture of Constantinople in 1453, effectively ending the Byzantine Empire and establishing the powerful Ottoman Empire. His conquests extended beyond Europe into Asia, solidifying his reputation as a formidable leader. The woodcut portrait featured here is from Andre Thevet's Cosmographie universelle, published in 1575. This extensive book detailed Thevet's explorations and provided historical and geographical insights into various lands he had visited. With over 1000 pages divided into 23 books, this work stands as a testament to Thevet's dedication to documenting his travels. In this monochrome artwork, we see Mehmed II depicted with an oblique profile wearing a turban that symbolizes his authority and leadership. As a Muslim ruler during the Middle Ages, Mehmed played a significant role in shaping Islamic politics and expanding the Ottoman Empire across vast territories. Todd-White Art Photography has beautifully captured this piece of history through their lens, allowing us to appreciate both the artistic value of the woodcut portrait and its historical significance. It serves as a reminder of Mehmed II's lasting legacy as one of history's influential figures whose actions forever changed the course of empires in the Middle East during the 15th century.
