LM of cortex and medulla of the cerebellum

Cerebellum. Light micrograph of a cross-section through the cortex (surface) and medulla (core) of a human cerebellum, part of the brain. The cerebe- llum is highly folded with fissures (thick white lines) between its ridges (lobules). The cortex has a molecular layer (light blue) which mainly consists of nerve fibre networks. Beneath this is a layer of Purkinje nerve cells (thin white lines). This lies over the granular layer (grainy black & blue) of nerve cells. Beneath the cortex is the medulla (black). This consists of white matter, large nerve fibres (axons). The cerebellum controls body posture & coordinates muscle move- ment & balance. Magnification: x100 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of the cortex and medulla of the cerebellum, a vital part of the human brain. The cerebellum, known for its highly folded nature with deep fissures separating its ridges or lobules, is beautifully captured in this light micrograph. The image highlights different layers within the cerebellum. The outermost layer, called the cortex, is depicted in a mesmerizing shade of light blue and consists mainly of nerve fibre networks. Just beneath it lies a layer composed of Purkinje nerve cells, represented by delicate white lines that create an exquisite pattern. Moving further inward, we encounter the granular layer characterized by grainy black and blue hues. This layer contains numerous nerve cells responsible for various functions within the cerebellum. Finally, at its core lies the medulla portrayed in striking black coloration. The significance of this complex structure becomes apparent as we learn about its crucial role in controlling body posture and coordinating muscle movement and balance. It serves as an essential component of our central nervous system (CNS), facilitating smooth motor function. With a magnification level set at x100 for a 5x7cm size print, Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into one aspect of human anatomy – revealing both beauty and complexity simultaneously.
