Germinating seed, SEM

Germinating seed. Image 1 of 4. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of one of the earliest stages of the germination of a plant seed. The radicle (white), the embryonic root, is beginning to emerge from the seed coat (testa, brown). This can be prompted by a number of things, including light, warmth and the presence of water. The rest of the embryonic plant is still inside the seed. Eventually, the embryonic shoot (plumule) will emerge and seed leaves (cotyledons) will begin to photosynthesise while the root gathers nutrients from the soil. This is a swede (Brassica napus) seed. For a sequence of seed germination, see images B787/394-397 and B787/398

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures one of the earliest stages of seed germination in exquisite detail. In this colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we witness the emergence of a radicle, the embryonic root, from the protective seed coat. The radicle appears as a striking white structure against the brown testa. Germination is triggered by various factors such as light, warmth, and water. At this stage, while the rest of the embryonic plant remains enclosed within the seed, it won't be long before the plumule emerges as well. The plumule represents the embryonic shoot that will eventually grow into a mature plant. As germination progresses, these tiny seeds will develop cotyledons or seed leaves that play a crucial role in photosynthesis. Meanwhile, their roots will delve into soil to gather essential nutrients for growth and development. The subject of this SEM image is a swede (Brassica napus) seed—a member of the mustard family known for its edible root vegetable. This photograph offers an incredible glimpse into nature's intricate reproductive process and showcases both scientific and artistic beauty. For those interested in exploring further stages of seed germination captured through SEM images, Science Photo Library provides an extensive sequence under reference numbers B787/394-397 and B787/398.
