Frau im Mond advert, 1929

Frau im Mond advert. The science fiction silent film Woman in the Moon (German: Frau im Mond), released in 1929, was written and directed by Austrian film-maker Fritz Lang, based on a novel by his wife Thea von Harbou (both credited at lower left). It was one of the earliest science fiction films, and brought the concept of rocket travel to the public. The film, produced by the German film company UFA (Universum Film AG) in Berlin, was not a success at the box office. One of the films consultants was the German rocket pioneer Hermann Oberth. This advert appeared in volume 11 (1929) of the German film news sheet Film-Kurier

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an advertisement for the groundbreaking silent film "Frau im Mond" (Woman in the Moon) released in 1929. Directed by Austrian filmmaker Fritz Lang and based on a novel by his wife Thea von Harbou, this early science fiction masterpiece introduced the concept of rocket travel to the public. Despite its historical significance, the film did not achieve commercial success at the box office. The advert, featured in volume 11 of the German film news sheet Film-Kurier, transports us back to a time when space exploration was still a distant dream. Illustrated with intricate detail and artistic flair, it captures both the imagination and technological aspirations of that era. The image prominently displays a lunar landscape with a futuristic spacecraft launching towards outer space. Notably, one of the film's consultants was Hermann Oberth, a renowned German rocket pioneer who contributed his expertise to bring scientific accuracy to this cinematic endeavor. This collaboration between visionary filmmakers and pioneering scientists highlights how art and technology can intersect to inspire generations. Detlev van Ravenswaay's expertly printed text adds depth to this visual representation of history as it preserves an important moment in cinema's evolution. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we are reminded of humanity's enduring fascination with space travel and our relentless pursuit of exploring new frontiers beyond Earth's boundaries.
