This offer resulted in a landmark legal case when Mrs Louisa Elizabeth Carlill, having used the product three times daily for nearly two months contracted flu. Mrs Carlill brought her claim for £100 to court when the Carbolic Smoke Ball Company refused to honour the offer. The company was ordered to pay Mrs Carlill in court and the case of Carlill V Carbolic Smoke Ball Company [1893] EWCA Civ 1 is frequently discussed as an introductory contract case.); English, out of copyright
