Artwork of the Earth 100 million years ago

Cretaceous continental drift. Artwork of the position of the Earths continents 100 million years ago, about mid-way through the Cretaceous period (136-65 million years ago). The Cretaceous continents occupied very different positions to those of today. During the Cretaceous period Africa and South America split to form the Atlantic Ocean (lower centre). Africa also moved northwards away from Gondwanaland, comprised of modern-day Antarctica, Australia & India (bottom right). North America and Asia were joined by a land bridge (top centre). Much of what is now North America, Africa and Europe (upper right) were covered in shallow seas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork takes us on a journey back in time, precisely 100 million years ago, to the mid-Cretaceous period. A mesmerizing depiction of Earth's continental drift during this era unfolds before our eyes. The continents we know today were scattered across the globe in vastly different positions. In the center of this masterpiece lies an awe-inspiring sight—the birth of the Atlantic Ocean. Africa and South America are seen parting ways, creating a vast expanse of water that would shape our world forever. Meanwhile, Africa embarks on its northward journey away from Gondwanaland—an ancient supercontinent comprising present-day Antarctica, Australia, and India—located at the bottom right corner. Atop the canvas, North America and Asia stand united by a land bridge—a connection that once linked these two great landmasses together. However, it is impossible to ignore how much has changed since then. The upper right portion reveals shallow seas engulfing what we now recognize as parts of North America, Africa, and Europe—a reminder that our planet's surface is constantly evolving through geological processes. This artwork not only showcases Earth's dynamic nature but also serves as a testament to plate tectonics and continental drift—the forces responsible for shaping our world over millions of years. Science Photo Library brings us this remarkable print—an exquisite blend of artistry and scientific accuracy—that invites us to marvel at Earth's ever-changing face throughout history.
