Cowans served a distinguished military career, holding the position of Quarter-master General and being a member of the Army Council throughout the conflict. Born in 1862, Cowans joined the British Army in 1881 as a second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and organizational skills.
