Cowans served a distinguished military career, holding the position of Quarter-master General and being a member of the Army Council throughout the conflict. His expertise in logistics and supply played a crucial role in the success of the British military efforts. Born in 1862, Cowans joined the British Army in 1881 as a second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and organizational skills. By the turn of the 20th century, he had become a colonel and was appointed as the Assistant Adjutant-General in the War Office. During the First World War, Cowans' strategic acumen was put to the test. As Quarter-master General, he oversaw the supply and logistics for the British Expeditionary Force in France.
