Cuculus Sparverioides, Large Hawk-Cuckoo, Hierococcyx sparverioides, is a species

Cuculus Sparverioides, Large Hawk-Cuckoo, Hierococcyx sparverioides, is a species of cuckoo in the Cuculidae family.. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Cuculus Sparverioides, also known as the Large Hawk-Cuckoo, a remarkable species belonging to the cuckoo family. The image was beautifully engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, who gained recognition for his taxidermy skills and became known as the bird-stuffer. John Gould's fascination with birds from the east began when a collection of avian specimens arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. This inspired him to publish a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played an essential role in this endeavor by creating intricate drawings that were transferred onto large lithographic stones, resulting in what is now famously referred to as "Gould plates". The depicted Cuculus Sparverioides originates from the Himalaya Mountains, adding an exotic touch to its already mesmerizing appearance. Its long tail feathers create a striking silhouette against a backdrop that highlights its vibrant colors and unique markings. This print not only captures the beauty of this Asian bird but also serves as a testament to both John and Elizabeth Gould's artistic talent and their significant contributions to natural history documentation during the early nineteenth century. It stands as an extraordinary piece within British art history, showcasing meticulous hand coloring techniques that bring this magnificent creature to life for all admirers of wildlife and ornithology alike.
