Padre Giovanni addressing the people in front of the Jesuits College, Naples... 1860. Creator: Unknown
Padre Giovanni addressing the people in front of the Jesuits College, Naples - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. During the fetes given at Naples in honour of the entry of King Victor Emmanuel into that city a boat, constructed by the fishermen of Santa Lucia, emblematical of the one from which Garibaldi landed at Marsala, was paraded about the streets by torchlight, and manned by red-shirted Garibaldini. It remained stationary for some time in the square in front of the Jesuits College, and while there Padre Giovanni, who had followed Garibaldi throughout the whole campaign, was hoisted into it, and in a few fervent words stirred up the enthusiasm of the people for their new King and the great kingmaker'. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the 19th century, Padre Giovanni, also known as Padre Pantaleo Giovannini, stands atop a makeshift boat, formerly used by the fishermen of Santa Lucia, in the heart of Naples. The scene unfolds during the grand celebrations marking the entry of King Victor Emmanuel II into the city in 1860. The boat, symbolic of the one that carried Garibaldi to Marsala, is manned by enthusiastic Garibaldini, clad in red shirts, as they parade it through the streets by torchlight. As the boat comes to a halt in the square before the Jesuits' College, Padre Giovanni is hoisted up, his bare feet dangling in the air. With fervor and passion, he addresses the crowd, his hand gestures adding to the intensity of his words. The people, a sea of bodies, young and old, men and women, boys and girls, listen intently, their faces illuminated by the flickering light of the flaming torches. The image, captured by the skilled hand of Frank Vizetelly, an English artist, for the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the historic moment when the people of Naples welcomed their new monarch, King Victor Emmanuel II, with open arms, under the guidance of the charismatic and influential Padre Giovanni. This poignant scene encapsulates the spirit of unity and hope that permeated the Italian peninsula during this pivotal period in its history.
