William Harvey lecturing on circulation

William Harvey (1578-1657), English physician, dissecting an animal during a lecture on the circulation of blood. By 1616 Harvey had dissected 80 species of animals, concentrating on the blood vessels. He noted that the valves joining the hearts two upper and lower chambers permitted blood flow in one direction only. He showed that the heart was a muscle which acted like a pump. He concluded that arteries and veins were linked by invisibly-small vessels so that blood moved around the body in a closed loop. He lectured on the subject from 1616 at the Royal College of Physicians in London. His ideas were widely accepted by the time of his death

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the groundbreaking moment when William Harvey, a renowned English physician of the 17th century, delivered a lecture on the circulation of blood. In this historical artwork, we witness Harvey dissecting an animal in front of an eager audience at the Royal College of Physicians in London. Harvey's meticulous dissections and observations led him to discover that blood flows in one direction only due to valves within the heart's chambers. He revolutionized our understanding by demonstrating that arteries and veins are connected through minuscule vessels, forming a closed loop system for blood circulation. His findings were widely accepted during his lifetime and continue to shape modern medicine. In this colored illustration, we see Harvey as a dedicated scientist and anatomist passionately sharing his knowledge with students and onlookers alike. The image portrays him as a distinguished figure dressed in traditional European attire while surrounded by laboratory equipment. This photograph not only pays homage to William Harvey's significant contributions but also serves as a testament to the progress made in medical science throughout history. It reminds us of how curiosity, experimentation, and relentless dedication can lead to groundbreaking discoveries that reshape our understanding of human physiology.
