Diagram of paths taken by the 2 Voyager spacecraft

Diagram showing the paths taken by the two Voyager spacecraft. Voyager 1 (orange track) was launched on 5 September 1977; it encountered Jupiter on 5 March 1979 & Saturn on 12 November 1980, then turned sharply & headed out of the Solar System along a path at 90 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic (the plane in which the planets orbit the Sun). Voyager 2 (red track) was launched on 20 August 1977, before Voyager 1; it visited Jupiter on 9 July 1979, Saturn on 25 August 1981, Uranus on 24 January 1986, Neptune on 24/25 August 1989, & is now heading towards the edge of the Solar System. Both Voyagers will travel close to nearby stars in about 40, 000 years

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable journey of the two Voyager spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. The diagram vividly illustrates their paths through space, revealing a story of scientific exploration that has captivated our imaginations for decades. Voyager 1, represented by the orange track, embarked on its interstellar mission on September 5th, 1977. It made groundbreaking encounters with Jupiter on March 5th, 1979 and Saturn on November 12th, 1980. After this awe-inspiring rendezvous with these gas giants, Voyager 1 took an unexpected turn and ventured out of our Solar System along a path perpendicular to the plane in which planets orbit the Sun. On the other hand, Voyager 2 (represented by the red track) was launched earlier than its counterpart on August 20th, also in 1977. This intrepid explorer visited Jupiter first on July 9th, 1979 followed by Saturn on August25th , 1981. Uranus was its next destination reached January24 th , 1986. Neptune became its final stopover before it set course towards the edge of our Solar System. As we marvel at this visual representation of their journeys thus far, it is astonishing to contemplate that both Voyagers will come close to neighboring stars approximately forty thousand years from now – a testament to humanity's insatiable thirst for knowledge and unyielding spirit of discovery. This print serves as a reminder that research and exploration
