Order of the Medjidie Medal (Fifth Class), Crimean War 1854-1856
This medal was awarded to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel George Frederick Stevenson Call. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The Call family served with the Royal Irish Regiment, which until 1881 was known as the 18th Regiment of Foot. It was also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded in 1922. The Turkish Order of the Medjidie was instituted in 1851 for distinguished service of members of the British Army, Royal Navy and French Army who came to the aid of the Ottoman Empire, against the Russian Empire, during the Crimean War. The medal is one of many honours and awards of the Crimean War period. New rules concerning the acceptance of foreign orders and medals were announced in 1855. The silver medal is in the form of a star with red enamelled centrepiece and attached to a green-edged white ribbon by a crescent moon enclosing a five pointed star. TRURI : 1931.40.50

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious Order of the Medjidie Medal (Fifth Class), awarded to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel George Frederick Stevenson Call during the Crimean War from 1854-1856. This remarkable medal is just one of seventeen campaign medals that have been bestowed upon members of the esteemed Call family, now proudly displayed in the museum collection. The Call family's legacy spans several significant conflicts, beginning with their service in the Peninsular War and culminating in their contributions during World War I. Serving under various titles such as the Royal Irish Regiment, 18th Regiment of Foot, and The Royal Irish Regiment of Foot, this brave lineage was disbanded in 1922. Instituted in 1851 to honor distinguished service rendered by British Army, Royal Navy, and French Army personnel who aided the Ottoman Empire against Russia during the Crimean War, this Turkish order holds immense historical significance. The silver medal itself takes on a star-shaped form with a striking red enameled centerpiece. It is suspended from a green-edged white ribbon by a crescent moon enclosing a five-pointed star. Amongst numerous honors and awards from this era, this photograph immortalizes an extraordinary piece that symbolizes bravery and valor. Its presence serves as a reminder of those who selflessly fought for justice and peace throughout history. (Photo credit: MIke Searle | TRURI : 1931.40.50)
