EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880, a significant medal awarded during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. The recipient of this particular medal was Captain G. F. Call, who served with the Royal Engineers. This stunning piece is just one of seventeen campaign medals belonging to the esteemed Call family, now proudly displayed in our museum collection. Dating back from the Peninsular War to World War I, these medals represent a rich history of service and bravery. Also known as the Roberts Star or Kandahar Bronze Star, this prestigious award was bestowed upon British and Indian troops who undertook an arduous 320-mile march from Kabul to Kandahar between August 9th and 31st in 1880 under General Frederick Roberts' command. The Battle of Kandahar on September 1st marked the final conflict of this war. Crafted from bronze, this five-pointed star features a crown atop it and bears inscriptions such as VR (Victoria Regina) and KABUL TO KANDAHAR 1880. On its reverse side lies details about the recipient's rank, name, and regiment. Although time has faded its once vibrant rainbow-colored ribbon, this medal remains a powerful symbol of honor for those who have dedicated their lives in service to their country. Its obverse design beautifully captures both the essence of British imperialism and the courage exhibited by soldiers during wartime. Photographed by MIke Searle at Royal Cornwall Museum (TRURI:1931.40.52), this image serves as a reminder not only of past conflicts but also pays tribute to all servicemen and women who have selflessly defended their nations throughout history.
