The image showcases the dedication and blessing of twenty brand new almshouses by none other than the esteemed Bishop of Durham, John Habgood. The significance of this event is further highlighted as Bishop Habgood receives assistance from two other prominent figures - the Rt. Rev A. K Hamilton, Bishop of Jarrow, and Dr J. A Ramsbotham, Assistant Bishop of Newcastle. Notably, Dr Ramsbotham also serves as a trustee for the Hospital of God at Greatham - an institution with roots dating all the way back to 1273. This heartwarming snapshot captures not only a physical structure but also embodies compassion and charity within its frame. The establishment of these almshouses reflects a commitment to providing shelter and support for those in need within the community. As we delve into this photograph's historical context, it becomes evident that religion played an integral role in shaping society during this era.
