Battle of the Alma, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Battle of the Alma, 1854. Scene from the Crimean War. View of this important action, from a Sketch by Lieut. E. C. Gordon, R.E...the point on the left is the retrenched camp of the Russians...the British troops are advancing, as are the French troops. On the left of the picture is the large village; and, in the centre, the burnt village at the mouth of the Alma...When the Russians were driven from their first position on the heights, they fell back on a second. They were driven from that, and tried to take up a third position; but in this they failed. They say the Imperial Guard had fine kits: many of our fellows got a good clean shirt from them. One drummer took two Russian prisoners: he caught them sneaking off under a hedge, ran up, took a dead man's musket as he passed, and made these fellows change direction for the rear'- making them move on with a bayonet'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the pivotal moment of the Battle of the Alma during the Crimean War, which took place on September 20, 1854. The scene is based on a sketch by Lieutenant E. C. Gordon, R.E., and offers an intriguing perspective of the battlefield. On the left, the retrenched camp of the Russians can be seen, while the British and French troops are advancing in the center. The large village on the left and the burnt village at the mouth of the Alma add to the chaotic and dramatic atmosphere of the battle. During the battle, the Russians were initially driven from their first position on the heights but managed to retreat to a second. They attempted to take up a third position but were ultimately unsuccessful. The Imperial Guard, known for their fine uniforms, were present in the battle, and some British soldiers were reported to have obtained clean shirts from them as spoils of war. An intriguing anecdote from the battle involves a drummer who captured two Russian prisoners while they were attempting to sneak off under a hedge. He seized a dead man's musket as he passed and compelled the prisoners to 'change direction for the rear' with a bayonet, effectively making them 'move on' from the battlefield.
