Rocky planets

Inner planets. Computer artwork of the rocky inner planets of the solar system. These are Earth (upper left), Mars (red, lower right), Venus (dark, behind Mars) and Mercury (brown, behind Mars and Venus). The Sun is seen emerging from behind Earth. These planets are known as the rocky (or terrestrial) planets, as they mainly comprise iron and silicon-rich rocks. This differentiates them from the much larger gaseous planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) further out from the Sun, which mainly comprise hydrogen and helium. Pluto, the furthest planet from the Sun, is thought to have a rocky core surrounded by water ice

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the rocky inner planets of our solar system in stunning detail. In this computer artwork, we are presented with Earth, Mars, Venus, and Mercury against the backdrop of a radiant Sun emerging from behind our home planet. The rocky nature of these inner planets is highlighted by their composition primarily consisting of iron and silicon-rich rocks. This sets them apart from the larger gaseous giants like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune that reside further away from the Sun. These outer planets are predominantly composed of hydrogen and helium. Notably absent from this image is Pluto; however, it is believed to possess a rocky core enveloped by water ice as it orbits on the outskirts of our solar system. This mesmerizing illustration serves as a reminder of the diversity within our celestial neighborhood. Each planet holds its own unique characteristics and mysteries waiting to be unraveled by scientific exploration. Thanks to Science Photo Library's expertise in capturing awe-inspiring moments like this one, we can appreciate the beauty and complexity inherent in our cosmic surroundings. Whether you're an astronomy enthusiast or simply captivated by space's wonders, this print offers a glimpse into the fascinating world beyond Earth's atmosphere.
