Colour TEM of primary lysosome in liver cell
Primary lysosome. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a primary lysosome seen in a liver cell. The lysosome (red) is a membrane bound structure that contains digestive enzymes. Around the lysosome are various organelles, with the nucleus at left (yellow/green). Lysosomes are particularly prevalent in cells of the kidneys and liver. A primary lysosome contains inactive enzymes. These are activated when the membrane of the lysosome is damaged or when a substance that is to be digested enters the lysosome itself. Lysosomes can digest food brought into the cell and destroy invading organisms or cellular debris. Magnification: x18, 000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of a primary lysosome within a liver cell. The image, captured using coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) technology, reveals the vibrant red hue of the lysosome, which is a membrane-bound structure containing powerful digestive enzymes. Surrounded by an array of other organelles, with the nucleus prominently displayed in yellow/green at the left side, this primary lysosome exemplifies its crucial role in cellular function. While these lysosomes are abundant in kidney and liver cells, they can be found throughout various organisms. What makes primary lysosomes intriguing is that they house inactive enzymes until their membrane becomes damaged or when substances requiring digestion enter them. Once activated, these enzymes become instrumental in breaking down food particles brought into the cell or eliminating invading pathogens and cellular waste. The magnification level of x18,000 allows us to appreciate every minute detail present within this 6x7cm-sized print. This remarkable visual representation offers invaluable insights into cell biology and cytology while highlighting the significance of organelles like primary lysosomes for overall cellular health. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the microscopic world that surrounds us – reminding us of nature's complexity and beauty on both macroscopic and microscopic scales.
