Lulworth Cove, UK, aerial image
Lulworth Cove, UK, aerial photograph. This is a coastal erosion feature on the south coast of England. It was formed when the sea broke through the hard coastal limestone rock, exposing the softer clays and sandstones a few dozen metres behind. These are eroded far more quickly than the limestone coastal rocks, causing the formation of the cove. At the back of the cove is a band of chalk, also more resistant to erosion than the clays and sandstones. Over the next few thousand years the cove will widen far more than it will increase in depth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph showcases the stunning beauty of Lulworth Cove, located on the south coast of England. The image captures a remarkable coastal erosion feature that has been shaped over time by the relentless power of the sea. As we gaze at this print, we witness nature's artistry unfold before our eyes. Lulworth Cove was formed when the mighty waves breached through resilient limestone rocks, revealing softer clays and sandstones hidden just meters behind. These delicate layers erode much faster than their sturdy counterparts, resulting in the creation of this magnificent cove. At its rear lies a band of chalk, an even more resistant material that withstands erosion better than surrounding elements. As we contemplate this photograph, it is awe-inspiring to imagine how Lulworth Cove will continue to evolve in the coming millennia. While it may widen significantly due to ongoing erosion processes, its depth will not experience comparable growth. This image serves as a testament to Earth's ever-changing landscape and highlights the intricate interplay between geological forces and natural elements like water and sea. It invites us to appreciate both the fragility and resilience inherent in our planet's geology. Science Photo Library brings us yet another extraordinary visual representation of our world's wonders with this aerial photography masterpiece capturing Lulworth Cove’s breathtaking coastline—a true gem nestled within Dorset's picturesque scenery in Britain.
