Cinnyris Gouldiae, Blue-throated Simla Yellow-backed Sunbird

Cinnyris Gouldiae, Blue-throated Simla Yellow-backed Sunbird. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning beauty of the Cinnyris Gouldiae, also known as the Blue-throated Simla Yellow-backed Sunbird. The image is an engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, renowned for their exceptional work in natural history illustration. John Gould's fascination with birds from the Himalayan Mountains began when a collection of these exotic species arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by this encounter, he conceived the idea of publishing a volume featuring hand-coloured lithographs of eighty different bird species, including figures of one hundred individual birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life. She meticulously made drawings of each bird and transferred them onto large lithographic stones, resulting in what are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". The level of detail captured in this particular print is truly remarkable. It highlights not only the vibrant blue throat and yellow back feathers that distinguish this sunbird but also its unique tail formation. The close-up view allows us to appreciate every intricate marking and pattern on its body. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration represents both British and European artistry at its finest. Its hand-coloured finish adds depth and richness to each element depicted. Overall, Quint Lox has masterfully captured an extraordinary moment from natural history through this photo print—a testament to both scientific curiosity and artistic talent that continues to captivate viewers centuries later.
