Keplers cosmological model

Keplers cosmological model. Composite image of a model of Keplers Platonic solids, with Latin text and the title of the work in which this model was described. The German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) developed this model to demonstrate the relative distances of the planets from the Sun in the Copernican system. This revolutionary new heliocentric (sun-centred) theory, had been published in 1543. Kepler published a supporting work, The Cosmographic Mystery (1597), that put forward the idea that the distances of the six known planets from the Sun were determined by the five regular solids seen here

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Kepler's cosmological model, a groundbreaking representation of the relative distances between planets in our solar system. Created by German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler during the Renaissance period, this composite image features his Platonic solids model accompanied by Latin text and the title of his renowned work. Kepler's heliocentric theory, first published in 1543, revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos by placing the Sun at the center of our planetary system. To support this revolutionary idea, he introduced The Cosmographic Mystery in 1597. This publication proposed that the distances between each planet and the Sun were determined by five regular solids depicted here. The interlocking geometrical shapes seen in this historical artwork represent cube, tetrahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron – collectively known as Platonic solids. Each solid symbolizes one of the six known planets at that time. With its intricate details and rich history dating back to the 16th century, this print captures both scientific research and artistic beauty. It provides a glimpse into Kepler's profound contributions to astronomy and orbital mechanics while highlighting his mastery over geometry. Displayed against a backdrop reminiscent of an old studio setting with printed text adding authenticity to its historical significance; this image from Science Photo Library invites viewers on a journey through time to explore Kepler's cosmological masterpiece – Mysterium Cosmographicum.
