Electrostatic generators, 1900
Electrostatic generators. Historical artwork of two Wimshurst machines seen from the front (left) and from behind (right). The Wimshurst machine was developed between 1880 and 1883 by the British inventor James Wimshurst (1832-1903). The handle is turned to rotate two closely spaced vertical discs in opposite directions (shown by arrows). This acts to separate electrical charge, which can be stored in Leyden jars (two seen at front at left). Charge builds up and produces sparks between the two metal spheres (upper left and upper right). Electrostatic generators first began to be developed from around 1865. Artwork from A Travers l Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork showcases the ingenious Electrostatic generators of 1900. Developed by the brilliant British inventor James Wimshurst between 1880 and 1883, these machines revolutionized the world of electricity. In this print, we are presented with a dual perspective - one from the front and another from behind. The intricate design is brought to life as two closely spaced vertical discs rotate in opposite directions when the handle is turned (indicated by arrows). This rotation effectively separates electrical charge, which can then be stored in Leyden jars positioned at the front left. As charge builds up within the machine, mesmerizing sparks dance between two metal spheres situated at both upper corners. Electrostatic generators emerged around 1865 and represented a significant milestone in technological advancement. This remarkable illustration captures not only their physical appearance but also their pivotal role in harnessing static electricity for scientific exploration. With its vibrant colors and attention to detail, this artwork transports us back to an era where innovation was flourishing. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge throughout history. Science Photo Library presents this exquisite piece as part of its extensive collection that celebrates scientific achievements across various disciplines.
