Clostridium tetani bacteria

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Clostridium tetani, the species of Gram-positive, spore-forming, rod-like bacteria that causes tetanus. The spherical endospore appears as a swelling on top end of each bacterium: 1 resting endospore is produced from 1 vegetative bacterial cell & germinates to give rise to a single cell (ie overall process is not one of multiplication). C. tetani exists harmlessly in intestines of man & animals but becomes pathogenic (causes tetanus) when introduced through a wound (where the anaerobic environment necessary for growth is found). Magnification: X 4, 700 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of Clostridium tetani bacteria, responsible for causing the debilitating condition known as tetanus. In this false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are granted a rare glimpse into the microscopic realm of these Gram-positive, spore-forming, rod-like organisms. The image reveals the distinct spherical endospores that appear as swellings on the top ends of each bacterium. It is fascinating to note that one resting endospore is produced from one vegetative bacterial cell and germinates to give rise to a single cell, rather than multiplying like other bacteria. Normally residing harmlessly in the intestines of humans and animals, C. tetani turns pathogenic when introduced through a wound where an anaerobic environment necessary for its growth can be found. This transformation leads to the development of tetanus or lockjaw, a severe condition characterized by muscle stiffness and spasms. At an impressive magnification level of 4,700 times at 35mm size, this SEM allows us to appreciate both the beauty and danger present within our microbial world. Through such detailed imagery provided by Science Photo Library's expertise in microbiology and bacteriology research, we gain valuable insights into these tiny yet formidable creatures that shape our understanding of infectious diseases.
