Artwork of asteroids in the early solar system

Solar system formation. Artwork of asteroids (planetesimals) in the early solar system. A jet can be seen erupting from a pole of the Sun. The planetesimals lie in a cloud (nebula) of gas and dust that surrounds the Sun. The solar system was formed when this nebula contracted due to gravitational forces. This process was possibly triggered by shock waves from a nearby exploding star (supernova). The planets formed by a process called accretion in which dust particles collided and formed planetesimals. These in turn attracted dust, gas and other planetesimals by gravitational attraction to form larger bodies

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the early stages of our solar system's formation, depicting a mesmerizing scene filled with asteroids and planetesimals. The image captures a moment when a powerful jet erupts from one of the poles of the Sun, adding an element of dynamism to the composition. Surrounded by a nebula composed of gas and dust, these planetesimals are scattered throughout space, forming a cloud-like structure around our young Sun. It is within this cosmic haze that the magic of planetary creation unfolds. As gravity takes hold, causing the nebula to contract, these tiny celestial bodies begin their journey towards becoming planets. The awe-inspiring process depicted in this artwork may have been triggered by shock waves emanating from an exploding star nearby - a supernova event. These shock waves could have set in motion the gravitational forces necessary for our solar system's birth. Accretion plays a vital role in this transformative process as dust particles collide and merge together to form larger planetesimals. Over time, these growing bodies attract more dust, gas, and other planetesimals through their gravitational pull until they eventually evolve into fully-fledged planets. Science Photo Library has beautifully captured this pivotal moment in cosmic history through artistry and scientific accuracy. This print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an educational tool for those fascinated by astronomy and cosmology alike.
