EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the Arctic exploration ship, Pandora, in Peels Strait on the 29th of August, 1875. The Pandora, under the command of Sir Allen Young, was employed in two consecutive attempts between 1875 and 1876 to discover the Northwest Passage, a long-sought sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans around the northern coasts of Canada and Alaska. Sir Allen Young's expeditions were also aimed at uncovering any remnants or traces of the lost Franklin Expedition of 1845. The Franklin Expedition, led by Sir John Franklin, set out to navigate the Northwest Passage but was last heard from in 1845, leaving a mystery that captivated the world for decades. Sir Allen Young's expeditions were significant in the ongoing search for answers regarding the fate of the Franklin Expedition and the possible discovery of the Northwest Passage. The Pandora, a sturdy and well-equipped vessel, is shown here bravely navigating the treacherous waters of Peels Strait, a narrow passage in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The image, taken from the Illustrated London News, is a testament to the courage and determination of the explorers who dared to venture into the unknown, facing the harsh Arctic conditions and the challenges of the unforgiving environment. This historical engraving is a valuable reminder of the rich maritime heritage and the spirit of exploration that has shaped the history of Canada, the Arctic, and the world. The Northwest Passage remains an important symbol of Canadian identity and a source of fascination for generations of explorers and historians.
