Falco Chicquera, Red-necked Falcon or Red-headed Merlin

Falco Chicquera, Red-necked Falcon or Red-headed Merlin. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of the Falco Chicquera, also known as the Red-necked Falcon or Red-headed Merlin. The image is an engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, renowned for their exceptional work in natural history illustration. John Gould's fascination with birds from the Himalayan Mountains began when a collection of these majestic creatures arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by this encounter, he conceived the idea of creating a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing these illustrations to life. She meticulously made drawings of each bird and transferred them onto large lithographic stones, resulting in what are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". The photograph captures every intricate detail of this Asian avian wonder - its exotic plumage, elegant tail feathers, and striking markings. The vibrant colors beautifully complement its unique features, making it truly mesmerizing. Dating back to the early 19th century, this artwork represents not only a remarkable collaboration between two talented artists but also serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with nature's wonders. It stands as a timeless reminder that even centuries later, we can still appreciate and marvel at the extraordinary diversity found within our animal kingdom.
