EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Albert Massard after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases a captivating underwater scene featuring three intriguing marine species: the Mauritius triggerfish (Rhinecanthus cinereus), unicorn leatherjacket (Aluterus monoceros), and planehead filefish (Stephanolepis hispidus). The Mauritius triggerfish, also known as the cendré herisse or baliste cendrée, is a vibrant, angular fish with a distinctive black and white pattern. Its large pectoral fins help it maneuver through the water with ease, while its trigger-like spines on its dorsal and anal fins serve as a defense mechanism. The unicorn leatherjacket, or monoceros, is a small, elongated fish with a unique, horn-like projection on its head. This enigmatic creature is also known as the unicorn triggerfish, but it is not actually related to the triggerfish family. Its body is covered in small, overlapping scales, and it sports a striking, mottled coloration. The planehead filefish, or hispid filefish, is a small, flatfish with a distinctive, rough texture on its head and body. Its coloration varies from brown to gray, with darker spots and stripes. The planehead filefish is an excellent camouflage artist, blending seamlessly into its rocky surroundings. This stunning engraving, taken from Bernard Germain de Lacepède's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825, offers a glimpse into the rich marine biodiversity of Mauritius and the Indian Ocean during the early 19th century. The intricate details of the illustration and the vibrant colors of the engraving make it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
