Jigsaw Puzzle : Rheumatoid arthritis of the knee
Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Rheumatoid arthritis of the knee
Rheumatoid arthritis of the knee joint, artwork. This is a condition in which the bodys immune system attacks the tissues of the joints. The plates of cartilage (menisci, purple) on the knee joint are partly worn away. The menisci allow the bones of the knee to slide over one another smoothly. Erosion of the menisci causes severe joint pain and immobility. The bones of the knee are the femur (thigh bone, upper right), the tibia (shin bone, lower left) and the patella (kneecap, on tibia at far left, peeled back here to reveal the inner structures). Below the tibia is the smaller fibula. In the background is a conceptual image of an antirheumatic drug molecule

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate details of Rheumatoid arthritis of the knee joint, showcasing the devastating effects of this autoimmune condition on joint tissues. The artwork reveals a sectioned view of the knee, with its various components clearly visible. The purple plates represent the menisci, which are crucial for smooth movement within the knee. Unfortunately, in this case, they have been partially worn away due to erosion caused by Rheumatoid arthritis. This deterioration leads to excruciating joint pain and limited mobility for those affected. Surrounding the knee bones - femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), patella (kneecap) - is a conceptual image depicting an antirheumatic drug molecule. This symbolizes hope for relief from this debilitating condition and highlights ongoing efforts in medical research to develop effective treatments. Through this thought-provoking illustration, we gain insight into both the destructive nature of Rheumatoid arthritis and potential therapeutic interventions that may alleviate its symptoms. It serves as a reminder of how important it is to understand and address diseases like these in order to improve healthcare outcomes for individuals living with chronic conditions. This powerful artwork was created by Science Photo Library as part of their collection dedicated to scientific illustrations and medical imagery.
