Impact sites, Comet Shoemaker-Levy / Jupiter collisi
Comet Shoemaker-Levy/Jupiter collision. Colour image made by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) showing numerous impact sites following the arrival of fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 at Jupiter in July 1994. The impact sites are the dark brown areas in a line from upper left to lower right. On the limb at upper left is Impact E/F (17/18 July). At centre is the star-shaped site of Impact H (19.26 GMT, 18 July). At lower right are three large sites (l-r); Impact Q1 (19.59 GMT, 20 July), Impact R (05.22 GMT, 21 July) and the merged Impacts D/G (17/18 July). Just above centre is Jupiters Great Red Spot

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring aftermath of a celestial collision between Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Jupiter in July 1994. Taken by the powerful Hubble Space Telescope (HST), this color image reveals a series of impact sites that resemble dark brown splashes stretching from the upper left to lower right. Each impact site tells its own story within this cosmic event. On the limb at the upper left, we witness Impact E/F, which occurred on July 17th and 18th. In the center, an intricate star-shaped pattern marks Impact H, precisely recorded at 19:26 GMT on July 18th. Moving towards the lower right corner, our attention is drawn to three large impact sites: Impact Q1 (at 19:59 GMT on July 20th), Impact R (at 05:22 GMT on July 21st), and finally, Impacts D/G merged together from their occurrences on July 17th and 18th. However, amidst these striking impacts lies one of Jupiter's most iconic features - its Great Red Spot - positioned just above center in this mesmerizing composition. This extraordinary photograph not only showcases the immense power unleashed during this comet strike but also serves as a testament to humanity's ability to capture such remarkable events occurring millions of miles away in our vast universe.
