The micrograph shows the arrangement of chloroplasts (green) around the circumference of the cell. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis in higher plants & green algae. They contain light-sensitive chlorophyll pigments, which react to produce sugar from carbon dioxide. Sugar can be stored in the chloroplast as starch (yellow). Algal chloroplasts often contain a body called a pyrenoid, seen as the blue mass at the centre of the large area of starch. Magnific- ation: x3100 at 35mm size, x6000 at 6x6cm size.
