EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artistry of Italian Renaissance sgraffitos, wood-mosaic, marble-mosaic, and bas-reliefs. Dating back to 1898, this collection of images takes us on a visual journey through some of Rome's most historic streets and iconic buildings. Figures 1 to 5 highlight the intricate sgraffito designs adorning houses along Rome's Via Giulia, Via dei Coronari, Vicolo Calabraga, Vigna alla via Porta S. Sebastiano, and Borgo al vicolo del Campanile. These stunning wall decorations demonstrate the mastery of technique employed by Renaissance artisans in creating elaborate patterns and motifs. Moving beyond Rome, figures 7 to 11 showcase the breathtaking beauty of inlaid marble-work found in prominent cathedrals and churches across Italy. The floor of Siena Cathedral displays an awe-inspiring mosaic-like design created with meticulously placed pieces of colored marble. Similarly impressive are tomb-plates from San Giovanni e Paolo at Venice and Sta. Croce at Florence that feature intricate marble-inlay work depicting scenes from religious history. The final set (figures 12 to 15) presents basso relievos from tomb-plates located within significant Roman churches such as Sta. Maria del Popolo and San Giovanni e Paolo at Venice. These sculptural elements exhibit remarkable craftsmanship and offer glimpses into the lives commemorated by these tombs. Plate 52 is part of "The Historic Styles of Ornament" a translation from German author H. Dolmetsch's seminal work published by B. T Batford in London in 1898. This invaluable resource allows us to appreciate the rich artistic heritage left behind by Italian Renaissance craftsmen for generations to come.
