CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. The steel frame for the south section of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital during construction, with a series of cranes in front.
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, located on Fulham Road in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. The image showcases the steel frame being erected for the south section of the hospital, with an array of cranes standing tall in front. During the years 1989 to 1993, Laing Management Contracting undertook this monumental project on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. The hospital was built on the grounds where St Stephens Hospital once stood before its demolition earlier that year. Remarkably, thanks to innovative fast track construction techniques employed throughout the process, this state-of-the-art teaching hospital was completed within a remarkable timeframe of less than five years. Such efficiency allowed for swift progress without compromising quality or safety standards. The significance of this achievement is further highlighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself officially inaugurating Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on 13 May 1993. This momentous event marked not only a milestone in healthcare infrastructure but also showcased Britain's commitment to providing cutting-edge medical facilities for its citizens. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this photograph serves as a testament to both architectural prowess and human ingenuity during one of London's most transformative periods – capturing an era defined by progress and innovation in healthcare construction.
