EDITORS COMMENTS
Andrey Grigor'evich Ukhtomsky's Tomb of Captain Clerc in Petropavlovsk, 1813, is an evocative and historically significant image that captures the essence of exploration and the spirit of discovery during the early 19th century. The photograph depicts the mausoleum of Captain Charles Clerc, a French naval officer who died during the Russian-French expedition led by Admiral Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern. This expedition, which took place between 1803 and 1806, was the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe. The image is taken from an atlas published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813, which includes maps of Kruzenshtern's route and 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, the expedition's doctor, naturalist, and official artist. The atlas is a testament to the rich cultural exchange that took place during this period of exploration. The photograph itself is a beautiful example of 19th-century engraving, with intricate details and precise lettering. The image shows the mausoleum of Captain Clerc, located in Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka. The mausoleum is a stark contrast to the rugged landscape that surrounds it, with its ornate columns and intricate carvings. The figures of men in traditional clothing, both Russian and Western, can be seen gathered around the tomb, paying their respects to their fallen comrade. The image is a poignant reminder of the meeting of frontiers that took place during this period of exploration, as different cultures and peoples came into contact with one another. It is also a reminder of the sacrifices that were made in the pursuit of knowledge and discovery. The Tomb of Captain Clerc in Petropavlovsk, 1813, is a beautiful and evocative image that continues to captivate and inspire us today.
