Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?, c1830s. Creator: GH Adcock

Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?, c1830s. Biblical scene, Acts 26: 14: And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. The conversion of Paul on the road to road to Damascus: Saul of Tarsus, (whose Latin name was Paul), was travelling from Jerusalem to Damascus on a mission to arrest the disciples of Jesus and bring them back to Jerusalem, when the resurrected Jesus appeared to him in a great light. Paul was struck blind, but after three days his sight was restored, and he became a follower of Jesus. Engraving after Study for the Conversion of St Paul, 1799, by Edward Dayes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?", takes us back to the biblical scene described in Acts 26:14. Created by GH Adcock in the 1830s, it beautifully captures the dramatic moment of Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus. The image depicts Saul of Tarsus (later known as Paul) traveling from Jerusalem to Damascus with a mission to arrest Jesus' disciples when suddenly he is confronted by a great light and hears a voice speaking in Hebrew. The engraving after Edward Dayes' "Study for the Conversion of St Paul" adds depth and emotion to this powerful religious event. In this particular scene, we see Paul struck blind but later regaining his sight after three days. This life-altering encounter led him to become one of Jesus' most devoted followers. Adcock's attention to detail is evident throughout the print - from the soldiers accompanying Saul on his journey, symbolizing persecution and resistance against Christianity, to the flags waving high above them representing different beliefs and faiths. This artwork not only serves as a visual representation of an important moment in Christian history but also invites contemplation about personal transformation and spiritual awakening. It reminds us that even those who seem firmly set on their path can experience profound change when confronted with truth and divine intervention.
