Mid-day Encounter in the Desert, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Mid-day Encounter in the Desert, 1857. There is a little cloud of dust ahead! The first feelings entertained are alarm; these, however, gradually subside as the strangers draw nigh: they consist of a party of two men mounted each on a camel, and a third on foot with a huge club in his hands - some Arabs belonging to one of the wandering tribes, bound to civilised Egypt on a speculative journey. The long lance or spear, decorated with ostrich and other feathers, denotes the rank of the traveller; a gun and a brace of pistols complete his armament...If we may judge by the astonishment depicted in the countenance of the foot guide, such meetings with human beings in the desert are rare. This party have been so long a stranger to the track of man that the sudden appearance of the travellers caravan has quite dumfoundered them'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

Mid-day Encounter in the Desert,
EDITORS COMMENTS
an intriguing 19th century wood engraving from the pages of the "Illustrated London News," captures the moment of surprise and intrigue that unfolds when two worlds collide in the vast, unforgiving expanse of the desert. The image, created by an unknown artist, depicts a group of three Arab men, dressed in traditional garb and mounted on camels, approaching a group of civilized Egyptians. The foot guide in the foreground, with a look of astonishment on his face, indicates that such encounters with human beings are a rarity in these parts. The Arab men are armed with long lances or spears, a gun, and a brace of pistols, signifying their rank and preparedness for travel and potential conflict. The long-lensed spear, adorned with ostrich and other feathers, is a striking visual element that adds to the overall sense of otherworldliness and exoticism. The desert, with its endless expanse of sand and sun, looms large in the background, serving as a reminder of the harsh conditions that these travelers must endure. The black and white wood engraving, with its intricate details and shading, brings the scene to life, transporting the viewer to a time and place far removed from the modern world. This engraving, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1857, offers a glimpse into the geography and culture of the desert and the people who inhabited it during the 19th century. It is a reminder of the importance of exploration and discovery, and the sense of wonder and curiosity that comes with encountering new and unfamiliar places and people.
