Samuel John Govier 's photographic van by an unidentified cottage, presumably in West Cornwall. Early 1900s

Samuel John Govier (1871-1967) was a pioneering photographer in the late 19th and early 20th century in Cornwall. In the early years he travelled on his bicycle or in a horse drawn van before setting up in a studio in Chacewater in 1907. Later, he also had a studio in St Agnes. In retirement he became a grocer in Chacewater where he lived. In retirement he became a grocer in Chacewater where he lived. His father, Samuel Govier, is standing in the van doorway with a dog and his mother, Annie, is facing the cottage. His sister, Bessie (who later became Mrs Bessie Olver) is though to be standing next to the horse and trap on the right hand side of the photograph. Photograph from the Govier family album. Transport - Romany Waggon - York Museum Featured Caravans Print

Transport - Romany Waggon - York Museum

Felicity Redfern, 23, assistant at York Museum, is shown by Gipsy caravan painter Jim Berry, 58, how to renovate an 82-year-old Romany waggon, which will become a York Museum exhibit. Jim answered an appeal by the museum curator, Robert Patterson, to restore the caravan so it can be placed outside the Edwardian-style pub in 'Half Moon Court', the street built inside the museum. When the work is completed, Felicity will carry out future repairs to the museum caravan. The exhibit is a known as a top cottage type or 'Leeds Wagon'
