Makaras, Phoenixes and Flowers, 1200s. Creator: Unknown
Makaras, Phoenixes and Flowers, 1200s. Central Asian designers drew from a wide variety of motifs, both imaginary and real. In this silk, rows of soaring phoenixes alternate with rows of makaras. Combining a fish body and tail, wings, and a dragons head, the makara originated in India as a water creature. With the spread of Buddhism, the motif migrated into the art of Central Asia and, from there, into the art of northern China. In Italy, exotic Central Asian patterns such as this inspired flights of imagination. One such example (seen in the photograph below) shows a creature, strikingly similar to the makara, spewing forth a dragon while a dog walks up its back

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of "Makaras, Phoenixes and Flowers" from the 1200s. Created by an unknown artist, this silk masterpiece reflects the diverse range of motifs that Central Asian designers drew inspiration from during this era. The artwork features rows of majestic phoenixes soaring gracefully through the fabric, alternating with rows of makaras. The makara is a fascinating creature originating in India, characterized by its fish body and tail, wings, and dragon's head. With the influence of Buddhism spreading across regions, this motif found its way into Central Asian art and eventually made its mark on northern Chinese art as well. In Italy, these exotic patterns from Central Asia served as a catalyst for boundless imagination among artists. One such example captured in this photograph depicts a creature resembling the makara expelling a dragon while being traversed by a dog walking along its back. Crafted using lampas technique with silk and gold thread embroidery, this textile represents an exquisite fusion of cultures and artistic expressions. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, it stands as an enigmatic testament to ancient craftsmanship whose creator remains unknown but whose legacy lives on through their awe-inspiring creation.
