Lieut. Campbells Party on their Return to Cape Evans, 7 November 1912, (1913)

Lieut. Campbells Party on their Return to Cape Evans, 7 November 1912, (1913). Northern party on arrival at Cape Evans, with laden sledge. Petty Officer George Abbot, Able seaman Harry Dickason, Petty officer Frank Browning, geologist Raymond Priestley, Lieutenant Victor Campbell and surgeon George Murray Levick were forced to overwinter in a cramped ice cave when pack ice prevented the Terra Nova from picking them up. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the moment of triumph and relief as Lieut. Campbell's party returns to Cape Evans on 7 November 1912 after a grueling expedition in Antarctica. The Northern party, consisting of Petty Officer George Abbot, Able seaman Harry Dickason, Petty officer Frank Browning, geologist Raymond Priestley, Lieutenant Victor Campbell, and surgeon George Murray Levick can be seen standing proudly beside their laden sledge. This image is part of the final expedition led by renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Departing from London on 1 June 1910, the Terra Nova Expedition aimed to continue scientific research while also striving to become the first team to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912, Scott and his companions discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Forced to endure harsh blizzards and dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. Lieut. Campbell's party faced similar challenges when pack ice prevented their rescue ship from picking them up. They were forced to overwinter in a cramped ice cave until they could finally make it back to Cape Evans. This poignant photograph serves as a testament to both the indomitable spirit of exploration and the unforgiving nature of Antarctica's icy landscape. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men in pursuit of scientific knowledge and human achievement.
