Emperor Penguins Eggs from Cape Crozier, 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Emperor Penguins Eggs from Cape Crozier, 1911, (1913). Three eggs collected from the Emperor Penguin breeding grounds. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Emperor Penguins Eggs from Cape Crozier, 1911" by Herbert Ponting takes us back to a significant moment in history. The image showcases three delicate eggs collected from the breeding grounds of Emperor Penguins during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was an ambitious scientific endeavor led by Scott. Alongside a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, and engineers, he aimed to continue his earlier research in Antarctica while also becoming the first person to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions were met with disappointment. They discovered that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had already achieved this remarkable feat a month prior. Tragically, blizzards and dwindling supplies prevented Scott and his remaining team members from returning safely. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the bravery and determination displayed by these explorers in their pursuit of knowledge and adventure amidst harsh conditions. It symbolizes both their achievements in scientific discovery as well as the sacrifices made during this ill-fated journey. Preserved within this historical print is not only the beauty of nature but also a testament to human resilience in the face of adversity. It stands as an enduring tribute to Captain Scott's indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to exploration despite its tragic outcome.
