King Peppel, of Bonny-Town, 1850. Creator: Unknown
King Peppel, of Bonny-Town, 1850. Portrait of an African chief in the Kingdom of Bonny, in what is now Nigeria. He...is about 32 years of age, having reigned nearly ten years. He is a great dealer in palm oil, and a very cunning trader; his influence with the people is very small, and from his exertions in traffic he is not much liked by the native gentlemen of Bonny. He has a sort of palace, but very badly furnished; and musters about thirty wives, to whom he appears to devote the greater part of the day. His complexion is a very light brown, and from all appearances has something to boast of in having a little white blood in his veins...His memory is excessively strong - in his conversation mentioning the different battles that have been fought, and all the leaders. General Napier is his great favourite, after "the Duke" [of Wellington]; he was glad to hear of his going to India again'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
King Peppel, of Bonny-Town (1850): An Unknown Portrait of a Nigerian Monarch This evocative photograph print captures the enigmatic figure of King Peppel, the ruler of Bonny-Town in what is now Nigeria during the mid-19th century. The exact age of the king is stated to be around 32, having reigned for nearly a decade. King Peppel was a prominent figure in the palm oil trade, renowned for his cunning business acumen. His influence among the people was limited, and his dealings in trade earned him few friends among the native nobility of Bonny. King Peppel's residence was described as a modest palace, poorly furnished, and he was said to have around thirty wives. His complexion was a light brown, hinting at possible mixed ancestry. The king's memory was remarkable, and he often spoke of the various battles that had taken place and the leaders involved. His favorite historical figures were General Napier and the Duke of Wellington. The photograph depicts King Peppel wearing minimal apparel, with bare feet, and surrounded by palm leaves and plants. He is shown wearing a simple loincloth, a common attire for African monarchs during this period. In the background, the Union Jack and the British flag are visible, symbolizing the influence of European powers in the region. This rare portrait, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of an African monarch during the Victorian era. It is a poignant reminder of the complex interplay of African and European cultures in the 19th century, and the enduring allure of the African continent.
