Heaving Guns, at Balaclava, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Heaving Guns, at Balaclava, 1854. Crimean War. British soldiers in the Crimea, engaged in the...heaving of the siege train...we must remember that the work is not half done when the guns and ammunition have been landed. After that there are still several miles of a rough hilly road to travel, and that, too, with very imperfect means of transit. It may easily be conceived, therefore, that the conveyance of 150 or 200 large guns, with the supplies of powder, shell-cases, and enormous round-shot required tor a week's operations, must have taken a long time. If we add to all these the gabions, fascines, and sand-bags, for the trenching parties, and the stores for daily consumption, some notion may be formed of the enormous amount of preliminary work before a gun can be fired'. Heaving Guns at Balaclava, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an evocative and historically significant photograph from the Crimean War era. The image captures a moment in time during the British military campaign against Russia, as soldiers laboriously heave large guns through the rugged terrain of the Crimean Peninsula, in what is now Ukraine. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a major European conflict that saw the involvement of several great powers, including Britain, France, and Russia. This photograph, taken from an engraving published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, offers a glimpse into the arduous logistical challenges faced by the British army during the campaign. The soldiers in the photograph are seen engaged in the "heaving of the siege train," a crucial yet labor-intensive process that came after the guns and ammunition had been landed. The journey from the shore to the battlefield was far from over, as the guns and supplies had to be transported over several miles of rough, hilly roads with limited means of transit. The image reveals a caravan of horses and men, each straining to pull a gun or a cart filled with supplies. The soldiers, dressed in their military uniforms, are focused and determined, their faces etched with the strain of the physical effort required. The guns, large and imposing, loom in the background, a reminder of the destructive power they hold. This photograph offers a fascinating insight into the preparations and logistical challenges of warfare during the 19th century. It underscores the importance of the role of the army's logistics in ensuring the success of military operations, and the immense effort required to transport and position heavy artillery on the battlefield. The image is a testament to the resilience and determination of the soldiers, who faced numerous challenges in the pursuit of their objectives.
