EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Burning of the Kent" showcases a tragic incident that occurred in 1825. Painted by Thomas M M Hemy in 1911, it depicts the ill-fated East Indiaman ship named Kent. Owned by the British East India Company and launched in 1820, the vessel embarked on its journey from The Downs on February 19th, carrying a total of 641 individuals. However, destiny had other plans for the Kent as it encountered an unfortunate accident at sea. Caught ablaze amidst The Bay of Biscay between the French and Spanish borders, this once majestic ship was reduced to smoke and flames. As chaos ensued on board, brave survivors fought for their lives while rowing boats became their only means of escape. The monochrome image captures both the intensity of the fire engulfing the ship and the vastness of the rough sea surrounding it. It serves as a haunting reminder of a devastating maritime disaster that unfolded during an era dominated by trade and exploration. Preserved within Bibbys Annual 1911 publication by J. Bibby & Sons in Liverpool, this historical artwork transports us back to a time when water transport was essential for global commerce. Through Hemy's skilled brushstrokes, we are reminded not only of human resilience but also how unpredictable nature can be. As we gaze upon this poignant scene frozen in time, let us remember those who perished aboard this ill-fated vessel while paying homage to
