The Flight from Lucknow, 1858, (c1920). Artist: Abraham Solomon
The Flight from Lucknow, 1858, (c1920). The siege of Lucknow was one of the major engagements of the uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. Lucknow itself was besieged by mutineers for 87 days from the outbreak of the mutiny until a column commanded by General Sir Henry Havelock broke through on 25th September 1857. Havelocks force was insufficient to break the siege however, and Lucknow was once again surrounded until finally relieved by another, larger force led by General Sir Colin Campbell on 25th November 1857. Illustration from Story of the British Nation, Volume IV, by Walter Hutchinson, (London, c1920s)

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the essence of one of the most significant events in Indian history. The image depicts the siege of Lucknow during the uprising against British rule in India in 1857. This particular moment showcases the fear and panic that engulfed both men and women as they desperately sought to escape their besieged city. In this scene, we see a group of people fleeing for their lives, running through chaotic streets with expressions of terror etched on their faces. Among them is a young girl, clutching onto her nanny or ayah for comfort and safety. The artist, Abraham Solomon, skillfully portrays the desperation and vulnerability felt by these individuals caught up in an intense conflict. The siege lasted for 87 days until General Sir Henry Havelock's forces managed to break through temporarily before being surrounded once again. It wasn't until General Sir Colin Campbell led a larger force to relieve Lucknow on November 25th, 1857 that its inhabitants found respite from this harrowing ordeal. Solomon's artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the brutality and upheaval caused by imperialism during this tumultuous period in Indian history. Through his masterful use of color and composition, he transports us back to those dark days when rebellion was met with repression. This print not only commemorates an important historical event but also pays tribute to those who endured unimaginable hardships during the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
