Alfred the Great, (18th century). Artist: J Collyer
Alfred the Great, (18th century). Alfred the Great (849-899 AD) was Anglo-Saxon king of Wessex from 871. Much of Alfreds reign was taken up with the struggle against the Danish invaders. After Alfred defeated them at Edington, Wiltshire, in 878, England was divided in half, with the south-western part in the hands of the Saxons, and the north-eastern portion, the Danelaw, administered by the Danes. War broke out again in the 890s, but by 897 the Danes had been defeated

Created by J Collyer, this engraving showcases Alfred's powerful aura as he stands tall in his royal attire. Alfred the Great was a renowned Anglo-Saxon king who ruled over Wessex during a tumultuous period in England's history. His reign was marked by relentless battles against Danish invaders, with much of his time dedicated to defending his kingdom. In 878, after a decisive victory at Edington, Wiltshire, Alfred managed to divide England into two parts - the Saxons controlled the south-western region while the Danes held authority over the north-eastern portion known as Danelaw. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his rule, including further conflicts in later years, Alfred proved himself to be a resilient leader. By 897 AD, he had successfully defeated the Danish forces and secured peace for his people. In this portrait-like depiction captured by J Collyer's skilled hand, we see King Alfred exuding strength and wisdom. Donning a magnificent fur cloak adorned with ermine trimmings and wearing a crown upon his head, he commands respect and admiration. The intricate details of his beard and clothing add depth to this monochrome image that truly brings history alive.
