Greetings Card : Sperm, SEM
Cards from Science Photo Library
Sperm, SEM
Sperm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of human sperm (spermatozoa), the sex cells of the male. Sperm are about 0.065 millimetres in length. Each head contains genetic material that is transferred to the female egg (ovum) during fertilisation. Their flexible tails enable them to propel themselves along the female reproductive tract. Only one sperm can successfully penetrate the egg and fertilise it. Sperm are formed in the testes by a specialised form of cell division known as meiosis. Each sperm contains 23 chromosomes, including an X or Y sex chromosome. Magnification x4000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of human sperm. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) technology has allowed us to witness the beauty and complexity of these tiny, yet powerful, male sex cells. Measuring a mere 0.065 millimetres in length, each sperm carries genetic material within its head that is crucial for fertilisation. The flexible tails of these remarkable creatures enable them to navigate through the female reproductive tract with astonishing agility. However, only one lucky sperm will successfully penetrate and fertilise the awaiting egg. This image serves as a reminder of nature's incredible precision and efficiency in ensuring reproduction. It is fascinating to learn that sperms are formed through meiosis, a specialized form of cell division occurring in the testes. Each individual sperm contains 23 chromosomes, including either an X or Y sex chromosome which determines the gender of offspring. This photograph magnified at x4000 reveals multiple swimming spermatozoa with their distinct heads and tails gracefully moving towards their ultimate destination – fertilization. It offers us a glimpse into the complex anatomy and functioning of our own bodies' reproductive system. Science Photo Library has once again captured an awe-inspiring moment from nature's repertoire with this stunning portrayal of life's smallest but most significant players - human spermatozoa.
